Bat Guano Removal and Mold Remediation
If you find piles of mouse like fecal material in your attic or on the ground outside your house, then you probably have bats. (Bats defecate before they enter your home and below where they roost for the day) Make sure that the fecal material is not old by laying down a piece of newspaper and see if any more droppings fall on the paper over the course of the next night. If there is, you have bats. (Just a word of caution about bat droppings. They can carry a fungus called Histoplasma capsulatum known to cause Histoplasmosis. Don’t breathe the feces and avoid contact with them. Ideally, you should wear a HEPA filter mask if you are to be around the bat colony roost ).
You can distinguish between bat droppings and mouse droppings in two ways. First, bat droppings tend to be clustered as they will pile up below where the bat is roosting. Second, bat droppings will have a shiny speckled appearance (from all the insect wings) and will crumble like dust when touched. Mouse droppings on the other hand, tend to be scattered about and become hard when dry.
The first step in an attic restoration is to evaluate the severity of damage done to the space and determine what must be done to repair it. We inspect the insulation and determine if all needs to be removed or if only sections of the attic are contaminated. Typically bats roost throughout the attic space and the entire attic must be emptied and cleared down to the studs, decontaminated with anti-bacterial disinfectant and enzyme treated.
Once all the insulation has been removed a high powered vacuum is used to clear out all the debris and waste to return the attic to its clean surface. Next we use an antibacterial agent to disinfect the attic space, a deodorizer to remove any strong scents from the infestation, and a mold treatment to fog the entire attic space and stop any possible growth of mold or fungus.
Finally we replace the attics insulation with brand new insulation which can be rolled or blown fiberglass and also blown cellulose that is up to the homeowners discretion.
When completed the attic space is free from any and all hazardous materials and safe once again.
